Democracy Sam Adams style

The world Sam Adams looked at was full of officials that needed to be taught lessons about the will of the people. He was what many contemporaries worried about when thinking about democratic forms of government.

Today many Americans fear the turn of events in decisions allowing eminent domain to apply to private use. In a Samuel Adams form of public theater of humiliation, a group has decided to give the Supreme Court a greater fear of eminent domain in the light of the recent Kelo v. City of New London, Connecticut decision.

At the very least this is a cruelly amusing reaction. Of course it also is a disturbing symptom of recent anti judicial rhetoric and actions in this country.

Kelo Decision Motivates Plan for 'Lost Liberty Hotel'

There are plans for a chain of proposals for Lost Liberty Hotels. One will appear at each present resident of a justice that voted with the majority in the above-referenced decision.

"On June 27, Logan Darrow Clements faxed a request to the City of Weare, New Hampshire seeking to build a hotel on the property at 34 xxxxxxxx Road--the home address of Souter.

Clements, CEO of Freestar Media, LLC, says Weare will reap greater tax revenue and economic benefits from a hotel on that property than by allowing Souter to continue to live there.

Clements notes in the fax, "Although this property is owned by an individual, David H. Souter, a recent Supreme Court decision, 'Kelo vs. City of New London,' clears the way for this land to be taken by the Government of Weare through eminent domain and given to my LLC for the purposes of building a hotel. The justification for such an eminent domain action is that our hotel will better serve the public interest, as it will bring in economic development and higher tax revenue to Weare.""
